Measure the spool and any adapter together. Bambu lists AMS 2 Pro limits of 197–202 mm diameter and 50–68 mm width; AMS Lite uses 40–68 mm width and a 53–58 mm hub. Cardboard edges may shed fibers or slip, while a plastic spool still needs to fit the feeder.
Check the exact feeder before loading
Closed AMS models and AMS Lite hold spools differently. Bambu's AMS 2 Pro specifications list a 197–202 mm spool diameter and 50–68 mm width. Its manual recommends an adapter for cardboard spools to reduce slipping and debris. For other closed AMS models, use that model's own documentation rather than assuming identical limits.
The AMS Lite specifications list a 40–68 mm spool width and 53–58 mm inner hub diameter. Check the spool you have: a product line or spool material does not confirm its hub size. An adapter adds to the spool's outside diameter, so measure the assembled spool before closing a feeder lid.
| Setup | Published check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Bambu AMS 2 Pro | 197–202 mm diameter; 50–68 mm width | Measure the spool with its adapter. Follow the manual's guidance for cardboard rims. |
| Bambu AMS Lite | 40–68 mm width; 53–58 mm inner hub diameter | Measure the center hole and total width. Do not assume every spool from one brand uses the same hub. |
| Other closed AMS models | Limits vary by model | Use the current manual for that AMS. Do not transfer AMS 2 Pro dimensions to another model without checking. |
| Heated filament dryer | No universal cardboard-spool temperature rating | Check the exact filament schedule, dryer manual, and spool limits. The dryer's maximum is not a material schedule. |
This page compares cardboard and plastic reels across AMS, AMS Lite, and heated dryers; the AMS 2 Pro cardboard-spool guide answers whether a cardboard spool works in that feeder.

A heated dryer needs two separate checks: the filament maker's schedule and the physical spool's limits. A dryer's highest setting is not a universal target. Do not assume a cardboard core, adhesive, or printed adapter can tolerate the same temperature as the filament. For storage after drying, see the vacuum storage and desiccant guide.
For material-specific advice, compare PLA spool choices and PETG spool fit. Use the feeder compatibility table for other material and feeder combinations. For closed AMS and AMS Lite dimensions, see the printer and spool compatibility guide.
Common questions
Do cardboard spools damage a Bambu AMS?
Not by default. Bambu recommends an adapter for cardboard spools in AMS 2 Pro to reduce slipping and debris. Check the spool, adapter, and exact feeder manual.
Do cardboard spools need an adapter for AMS Lite?
Measure the spool width and center hole against AMS Lite's published 40–68 mm width and 53–58 mm inner hub limits. Use an adapter only if the actual spool needs one and the assembly still fits.
Can I put a cardboard spool in a filament dryer?
There is no universal dryer temperature for cardboard spools. Follow the exact filament maker's drying schedule and the spool and dryer limits; do not assume a dryer's maximum is safe for every spool.
